Still top of the Agenda

I was walking with my mate Jack this week. Our walk usually consists of a quick loop of New Farm, a coffee at the deli and solving all of the world’s problems.

I was chewing his ear off about my theory about a looming wave of tenants about to meet the shrinking pool of available rental properties in January. So top of the agenda was finding the fastest solution.

We agreed repurposing existing structures was the quick fix. Jack spoke of the vacancy of commercial properties. Brisbane City shows an 11 per cent vacancy and potentially could present a short term option for both tenants and landlords.

The other option, and Brisbane City Council is looking into this, is industrial properties on the city fringe. Areas that used to be on the outskirts of town, but as the city grows could become perfect for gentrification.

Think about the woolstores in the ’90s and now how Teneriffe presents. Another speedy option could be building granny flats. The state government allows for homeowners to rent out their granny flats to people other than immediate family members. With the high cost of building, the minefield of zoning changes and potential tax implications, you’ve got to know your stuff before you start.

Ultimately we need more government support in the form of grants, relaxations or other ways to ensure compliant properties are available. With that riddle solved we headed to the deli to focus on finding a Wallabies coach.
